The death of 17-year-old athlete Austin Metcalf continues to reverberate through the North Texas community after a jury convicted Karmelo Anthony of murder in the fatal stabbing at a high school track meet.
Anthony, who was 18 at the time of the April 2025 incident,
was convicted in June 2026 and sentenced to 35 years in prison. Contrary to some claims circulating online, the sentence was not death. Anthony’s attorneys have continued to challenge the conviction, and a Texas judge denied his request for a new trial in August. His legal team said it planned to appeal.
Metcalf, a student-athlete from a competing high school, was participating in the track competition near Dallas when a confrontation developed between the two teenagers. According to testimony reported by the Associated Press, Anthony had been sitting beneath a tent belonging to Metcalf’s team. Witnesses said Metcalf and others asked him to leave, and the confrontation escalated. Anthony eventually pulled a knife and stabbed Metcalf in the chest.
At trial, Anthony’s defense argued that he acted in self-defense. Prosecutors disputed that account, and jurors ultimately rejected the self-defense claim before finding him guilty of murder.
The case attracted intense national attention, including discussion of race and extensive
activity on social media. Anthony is Black and Metcalf was white, but attorneys for both sides told jurors that race was not a factor in the confrontation. The case also generated harassment and threats involving people connected to both families, according to prosecutors.
Anthony’s request for a new trial centered partly on disagreements over evidence and his decision not to testify. His lawyers argued that those issues affected his defense strategy, while prosecutors maintained that the original trial was fair. Judge Michael Chitty rejected the request after reviewing the arguments.
For Metcalf’s family and friends, the case remains tied to the loss of a young athlete whose life ended at 17. For Anthony, the legal process is continuing through the appellate system, meaning the case is not necessarily at its final stage.
