Here’s What Hillary Clinton Had to Say About the Democratic Party’s Decent Into Socialism

The former First Lady, former Secretary of State, and two-time presidential loser gathered with the Council on Foreign Relations crowd in East Hampton on Monday to offer her thoughts on the state of the Democratic Party. When asked about the socialist takeover — the DSA candidates winning primaries, the communism-endorsing Hasan Piker dictating the terms of Democratic Senate nominations, the DSA co-chair confirming on live television that she wants to abolish the Pentagon — Hillary Clinton called it an “experiment.”

Her exact words: “The Democratic Party right now is, I think, going

through a kind of an experiment… I think that’s healthy.”

Let’s mark the moment. The woman who ran the most expensive presidential campaign in history on a platform of centrism and institutional stability just told a room of wealthy Hamptons liberals that her party hosting candidates who want to abolish prisons, borders, the Senate, and the United States military in its current form is healthy experimentation. Oh, and abolish wealth, too — except for those few power elite.

This is the party’s elder stateswoman. This is the person who is supposed to provide the institutional wisdom that tells young voters why socialism has failed everywhere it’s been tried — in Cuba, in Venezuela, in every country that sacrificed freedom for the promise of government-managed equality. Instead she’s describing it as a valuable learning experience.

When asked what George Washington would think of the current moment, Hillary said he’d be “heartsick” — then predictably pivoted to attacking President Trump, the most ‘America First and Always’ president in a century, as the source of all political dysfunction.

The irony is total and self-inflicted. She invokes the Founders warning against

dangerous factions — then calls her own party’s embrace of the most anti-American faction in modern political history “healthy.” She invokes George Washington’s concern about factional division — while the party she’s nominally a member of has literally produced a nominee in Michigan who says Israel doesn’t have a right to exist, backed by a man who praises Mao Zedong.

Washington would be heartsick, Hillary. But not about who she thinks.

Bill Clinton built his political identity as a centrist. Hillary always ran further left than he did. But even by her standards, calling the socialist takeover of the party healthy represents a complete capitulation — the kind of pander to whatever the current “thing” is that has defined her entire political career.

This is what the Democratic Party’s establishment has become. Not fighters against the socialist takeover. Not institutional voices telling young people why freedom works and socialism doesn’t. Just wealthy Hamptons liberals calling the rot healthy because they don’t want to lose the votes that come with it.

George Washington warned about exactly this kind of self-interested accommodation with dangerous factions. Ronald Reagan warned we are only one generation away from losing our constitutional freedoms. Hillary Clinton just said she thinks its “healthy” – from the pampered enclave of the Hamptons.
