South African authorities are grappling with escalating panic following the discovery of nine women’s bodies across the Ekurhuleni municipality over the past two months. The crisis deepened on Thursday after a passerby found the body of an unidentified woman, estimated to be around 30 years old, near a construction site in the Dawn Park suburb east of Johannesburg.
According to Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Fred Kekana, the latest victim suffered
a severe stab wound to her side and an apparent slashed throat. Her death marks the ninth such grim discovery since mid-July across several nearby communities, including Kempton Park, Rhodesfield, and Olifantsfontein. Most of the victims—found partially or fully unclothed in open fields, streets, and industrial lots—bore signs of physical trauma.
While forensic specialists have only formally identified two of the deceased, including 37-year-old amateur runner Elizabeth Moselakgomo, the striking similarities in victim profiles and dumping sites have prompted widespread fear that a serial predator is active in the region.
Law enforcement deployed a multidisciplinary task force and increased ground patrols while offering a substantial reward for information. Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili declared that investigators will not tolerate repeated killings, warning the culprits that “freedom is temporary.” As women’s rights advocates and residents stage protests demanding immediate intervention, detectives are urging families to report missing persons without delay to assist DNA matching efforts.
